15 The Hungarians would probably see this differently. In Hungary, the various wars of independence — from Bocskai, to Rákóczi, to the Wesselényi conspiracy — were seen as fights against Habsburg centralism, and they all occurred well before the time of Maria Theresia. But it was the Hungarian example that later taught the Habsburgs about the importance of subsidiarity and respecting regional identities, which are important factors in Hungarian politics even to this day.
